Image too large or unsupported format
Your image exceeds Google's size limits or is in a format Google does not accept, so the product cannot show.
What this error means
Google accepts images only up to a certain size and only in certain formats. When your image is too large in pixels or file size, or saved in a format Google does not support, it cannot be used and the product is disapproved.
Why it happens
The limits are a maximum of 64 megapixels and 16 MB per image. Files above either limit are rejected. Format matters too: Google supports JPEG, WebP, PNG, non-animated GIF, BMP, and TIFF. Anything else, including animated GIFs or unusual formats, is not accepted. This usually comes from uncompressed source photos or an export in the wrong format.
How to fix it
- Keep each image under 64 megapixels and under 16 MB in file size.
- Save images in a supported format, with JPEG, WebP, or PNG the safest choices.
- Compress oversized photos without dropping below the minimum resolution, since too small is a separate problem.
- Update the
image_linkattribute to point at the corrected file. - Update the feed and wait for re-crawl.
Fixing it in your store
Oversized or wrongly formatted images usually come from the original upload or a CDN serving the raw file. Make sure your store or CDN serves a reasonably compressed, supported-format version through the image_link URL. As a best practice, not a Google requirement, aim for large but sensible dimensions such as around 1500 by 1500 pixels, which stays well inside the limits while meeting the recommended quality.
How long until it clears
Once a correctly sized, supported image is live and re-crawled, expect approval within 1 to 2 days.
