Incorrect Google product category
Google has placed your product in the wrong category of its taxonomy, which you fix by submitting the right category in the google_product_category attribute.
What this error means
Google assigns every product a place in its own category taxonomy. When you do not submit the google_product_category attribute, Google guesses from your title, description, and page. A wrong guess is not always flagged as a formal error in Merchant Center, but it shows up as one in practice: your products appear for the wrong searches, compete on the wrong terms, or suddenly face requirements that do not fit them.
Why it happens
Auto-categorization works from text, and text can mislead. A phone case with the phone model in the title lands in the phone category, wine gums land in alcohol, and a t-shirt with "vintage print" drifts into collectibles. The wrong category has real consequences: apparel categories require color, size, age_group, and gender, so a miscategorized product can rack up missing-attribute errors for fields it never needed. Categories tied to restricted products, like alcohol or health, can even trigger policy disapprovals.
How to fix it
- Look up the right category in Google's product taxonomy. Use the most specific one that fits, not the top-level one, so "Apparel & Accessories > Shoes" rather than "Apparel & Accessories".
- Submit it in the
google_product_categoryattribute, as the full path or the category ID. Your value overrides Google's guess. - If the wrong guess came from a misleading title, fix the title too, since it influences matching well beyond categorization.
- Check whether the old, wrong category caused follow-on errors, such as apparel attributes on non-apparel products, and confirm those clear after the change.
Fixing it in your store
Map your store's categories to Google's taxonomy once in your feed tool, so every product in a store category inherits the right Google category automatically. Do the mapping at the most specific level your catalog supports. New products then land correctly without per-product work, and the guess-work never comes back.
How long until it clears
Category changes take effect within a few days of the feed being processed. Follow-on errors caused by the wrong category clear on their own schedule once the category is right.
