Missing value [tax]

What this error means

This is a United States requirement. Because US sales tax varies by state, Google shows it separately from the product price and needs to know what to display. When neither your account tax settings nor the feed's tax attribute provides a usable value, the product is disapproved. A common variant is submitting the tax attribute in the feed but leaving out its required rate sub-attribute.

Why it happens

Stores outside the US hit this when they start targeting the US without touching the tax section of Merchant Center, since no other country requires it. US stores hit it when tax settings were never completed, or when a feed tool exports a partial tax attribute, for example a country without a rate, which overrides the account settings with something incomplete.

How to fix it

1. Set tax at the account level in Merchant Center. For nearly every store this is the right place, and it removes the need for any tax data in the feed.
2. In the tax settings, configure the states where you collect sales tax, or let Google determine the rate for destination-based states.
3. If you genuinely need per-product overrides through the feed's tax attribute, always include the rate sub-attribute, and remember the feed value overrides your account settings for that product.
4. If you do not sell to the US at all, remove the US as a target country. The requirement disappears with it.
5. Resubmit and wait for reprocessing.

Fixing it in your store

Check whether your feed tool sends a tax attribute at all, and strip it unless you have a specific reason to override account settings per product. Half-filled tax attributes coming out of feed plugins are a more common cause than missing account settings. Manage US tax in one place, Merchant Center's account settings, and keep the feed silent about it.

How long until it clears

Expect the products to requalify within 1 to 3 days after tax is resolved through the settings or the corrected feed.
